Welcome to a new view of an age-old concept. Reciprocal Inhibition as been around for many years. This method utilizes the client's brain to tell the targeted muscle to relax. Of course, the difficult part for you is to figure out: (1) which muscle is the culprit and (2) how to apply the releases to the various positions your client is able to accommodate.
BENEFITS
This technique will:(and has for other students)1. Help your business during hard times as you become known for successfully treating pain problems
2. extend your career by decreasing the stress on your hands, fingers and thumbs.
3. increase your earning potential by enabling you to treat your clients in less time (more clients)
4. helps you retain clients by reducing their pains without hurting them (they'll request the work)
5. increase your income by seeing referrals from your satisfied clients
6. allows you to work on larger and stronger clients with no strain (as they only MATCH your resistance)
Theory of Reciprocal Inhibition
When the central nervous system sends a message for the agonist (muscle causing movement) to contract, the tension in the antagonist (muscle opposing movement) is inhibited by impulses from motor neurons, and thus MUST simultaneously relax.
This information can be used to ease the pain of an acute muscle spasm or cramp. Contract the muscle opposite of the muscle spasm and the spasm will let go!!! The contraction must be isometrically resisted.

What others Say
Muscle energy technique (MET) is the single most profound method of treatment for soft tissue pain that I have ever come across. It accurately evaluates all of the bony landmarks, joint positions, and joint functions of the spine and pelvis. It treats imbalances in the neuro-musculoskeletal mechanism more effectively and more thoroughly than anything else that falls into the massage therapist's scope of practice."Hip Pain" by Rich Phaigh , Massage & Bodywork Summer 98 pg 25
How I got started
After reading this excerpt from my textbook and studying from Leon Chaitow's "Muscle Energy Techniques" I became excited about the absolute statement that the muscle MUST release. That began the adventure! Bless our clients and friends who were willing to be guinea pigs during the development process.. They enabled me to refine and master "Reciprocal Inhibition" like it has seldom been taught. Do you have clients with sciatic pain who have been told by their doctor to take pain killers and "live with it"? When you get rid of that pain in less than 5 minutes without elbows and thumbs adding to their discomfort, they will love you forever and send all their friends to see you, too.You will also be able to teach them how to treat themselves at home, should the problem arise again.
Don't worry that you won't be able to remember everything you will be taught. I have written a book that you will be able to purchase in class, "Amazing Pain Relief using Reciprocal Inhibition". This book was written by a therapist (me) for dedicated therapists whose desire is to work with those in pain. This manual is for educational purposes only and should not be used in place of proper training. The practitioner is encouraged to always use sound clinical judgment in making decisions about his/her ability to help each individual and refer to a qualified professional when there is any shadow of a doubt.
Each book has a protocol guide, treatment guide, an anterior and posterior pain map, the muscles located at each side, then the muscles in alphabetical order. And PICTURES of each release position with instructions of what the therapist does and says to the client (book should be "Massage for Dummies").
You will learn to treat:
- Hammer toes
- Claw toes
- Charlie horses (cramps or spasms)
- IT band
- Sciatica
- QL release
- Knee pains
- Low back
- Shoulders
- Neck
- Tennis and golfers elbow
- Carpal tunnel
- TMJ
- Headaches
We ask all students to sign a pledge of not sharing or teaching these techniques to others out of respect for the time I have invested in this process.
We also offer a "How to Treat Yourself using Reciprocal Inhibition" and "Stretches for 100 + Muscles". Each book is identically numbered so you can treat you clients, Yourself and stretch those muscles.
In our practice, we tell our clients that we want them to leave feeling satisfied that their complaint (pain) has been adequately addressed or they do not pay us. Likewise, if at the end of the day, you do not feel you have received fair value for this course - don't pay me. Of course, you also do not receive credit for the class.
All classes are 6 CEUs and cost $120 at the door - $90 early registration with a $25 non-refundable deposit made at least one week before scheduled class. Former students receive an additional $15 discount.
THERAPISTS, please plan on coming to a class near you for the sake of your career and your clients.
